Jersey City, NJ- Hudson Catholic senior and Jersey City resident Weeshamar Senatus has earned an acceptance (and full scholarship) from the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point.
Senatus carries a 4.0 GPA at Hudson Catholic and forced her way into the De La Salle Honor society with her hard work. “I love a challenge,” she said. “I told the Dean of Students (at the time) that I knew I could do better. I set out to prove that I could do it and I did do it.” A National Honor Society member, Weeshamar spends most of her off team running track and cross country where she has racked up numerous individual and team medals. She chose Hudson Catholic four years ago for many of the same reasons she chose West Point. “Hudson Catholic was my first choice,” she said. “It’s a family where everyone is close with each other. The faculty care about their students and their students’ success.”
The West Point application is an intense process that requires applicants to write an essay, submit a resume, take a fitness assessment, and get a recommendation from a sitting congressman, senator, or Vice President. Senatus received a letter from Rep. Donald Payne (NJ-10).
West Point cadets are awarded full tuition scholarships to attend and must commit to serve at least 2 years active duty and 3 years as a reserve. Senatus plans to do more than that. According to Weeshamar, the idea is to pay back her parents who sacrificed to get her to Hudson Catholic and supported her along the way.
