Service Opportunities
Responsibility to others is an important value emphasized at Hudson Catholic. Our young men live these values every day as part of the Hudson Catholic experience.
To help them direct their efforts, we offer the Lasallian Youth Corps and the Peer Ministry Program. Whether it is working in a soup kitchen on their weekends, or collecting over 4000 pounds of donated clothing during Spirit Week, the members of the Lasallian Youth Corps are keenly aware of their responsibility to help those around them.
The Peer Ministers are an important part of the daily life of Hudson Catholic. During every young Hawk's freshman year he will have a Peer Minister who serves as a Big Brother. This junior or senior will contact his freshman during the summer and establish a link. He will then meet regularly with that freshman during the beginning of the school year. The Big Brother Program is a wonderful way to help a wide-eyed freshman adapt to the trials and tribulations of high school life. When not mentoring underclassmen, the Peer Ministers organize the school liturgies, serve as tutors, and are Student Ambassadors at school Open Houses. In addition, a separate service project is a requirement for junior and senior Religion courses.
Academic Opportunities
The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These four criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.
- Scholarship: "students who have a cumulative grade point average of 85%, B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent standard of excellence, or a higher cumulative average, set by the local school's faculty council meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character."
- Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.
- Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experience can be drawn from school or community activity while working with or for others.
- Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern and respect for others and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.
Spiritual Opportunities
Hudson Catholic truly is dedicated to educating the mind and the spirit. Students in the 9th, 10th and 11th grades all attend one-day retreats held on campus during the school year. Every senior will attend a three-day overnight retreat held in Adamstown, Maryland. While all juniors and seniors are required to complete 10 hours per year of Christian Service, members of the Lasallian Youth Corps, Peer Ministry and National Honor Society must complete 20 hours for their service requirement.
Music Opportunities
The Music Club is creating quite a buzz at Hudson Catholic. Now in its third year, the club is starting to bear the fruits of its labor. Each member must pass an audition before he is allowed to become a performing member of the club. Each candidate who is successful in his audition receives a $500 scholarship, renewable annually. The Music Club performs at liturgies, assemblies and sporting events, among others.
Student Government Opportunities
Each year, students may run for Student Council election on tickets consisting of five. The tickets are expected to run fair and ethical campaigns leading up to the election. The student body is responsible for electing a ticket of its choice, as they participate in the democratic process. In addition, each homeroom elects a representative who serves as a liaison between the Student Council and the general student body.
Student Publication Opportunities
Hudson Catholic provides two venues for student publication- the newspaper, The Commentator, and the yearbook, The Hawk. Each of these publications is student generated, with oversight provided by a faculty moderator.
