Press Release From The Archdiocese of Newark May 20, 2008 Jim Goodness Steve Dnistrian, HC Alumni Association Hudson Catholic to be Co-Ed in September 2009 Hudson Catholic Regional High School, Jersey City, the all-boys college preparatory school that recently undertook a very successful effort to stay in operation after June 2008, will become a co-educational school in September 2009. Rev. Kevin M. Hanbury, Ed. D., Vicar for Education and Superintendent of Schools of the Archdiocese of Newark, made the announcement following conversations with the DeLaSalle Christian Brothers, the religious community that administers the school, and members of the alumni board that has been involved in the effort to continue the school. "It is most important for everyone to know," said Fr. Hanbury," that all involved in the Hudson Catholic's long-range planning agree that broadening the field of eligible students to include young women is both a natural and necessary element of the school's future. We anticipate that this announcement will be welcomed happily by parents, current students and prospective students." Planning will commence this summer so that young women will be welcomed as equal members of the school community in September 2009. While recruiting for the freshman class will include both young men and women, Hudson Catholic Regional High School will welcome young women in grades 10 and 11 as space allows. School representatives will be ready to discuss with both its traditional and new audiences how Hudson Catholic's rigorous, faith-based educational program can lead to a solid foundation for college and life. "We know that's precisely what parents and students want -- a great education with high moral values," Fr. Hanbury said. "Working with the Archdiocese of Newark and the Christian Brothers, we are beginning the process of shaping a new future for Hudson Catholic," said Thomas F.X. Bender, chairman of the Hudson Catholic Alumni Association's Save Our School Committee. "We remain firmly committed to serving the educational needs of our students. With Hudson Catholic's strong traditions and identity, we will attract new generations of young people by building on our foundation of academic excellence and faith-based teaching, which have been -- and will remain -- hallmarks of Hudson Catholic." |
