The Lasallian Convocation on the Rights of the Child at the United Nations
By William Hanna, `11
From April 18th to April 20th of 2010, Hudson Catholic sent four students to the Lasallian Convocation on the Rights of the Child at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
The delegation consisted of Stephen Kenny, Daniel Ferrer, William Hanna, and Jerrell Chalmers, with their moderator Ms. Bridget McCarthy. Lasallian schools from across the country and Canada joined one another to discuss the topic “Rights of Children,” a theme that the Lasallian schools are very much committed to.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international treaty that guarantees persons under the age of eighteen certain rights. The CRC has been ratified by every country represented in the United Nations except for the United States and Somalia. Children deserve to grow up in life-giving and loving environments. The Lasallian tradition emphasizes that all people, especially the young, have inherent dignity being that they are made in God’s image. As educators and students embedded in this tradition, we can work together towards living in a country that provides rights to all.
